One of the early sites of the First Presbyterian Church of Los Angeles
We are thrilled to announce that the Synod of Southern California and Hawaii has officially approved the groundbreaking project to celebrate 170 years of Presbyterian witness in the Los Angeles area. This project, which will document and share the rich history of Presbyterianism from its beginnings on March 17, 1855, to the present day, is set to unite Presbyterians across the region and inspire future generations.
The project will involve comprehensive research, collaboration with local filmmakers, and the production of visual materials such as documentaries, short films, and printed booklets. These materials will serve to deepen the connection of Presbyterians to their heritage and encourage potential new members to join the community.
A key goal of the project is to ensure that the diverse voices and experiences within the Presbyterian community are represented and celebrated. To achieve this, the project will include community engagement activities such as workshops, focus groups, and historical site tours.
Our Synod has committed $25,000 and it is hoped that additional support will come from local Presbyteries, the Presbyterian Historical Society and the Presbyterian Mission Agency. This funding will support research, production, community engagement, and the formation of strategic partnerships with educational and cultural institutions.
As we embark on this exciting journey, we invite all members of our community to participate and share in the celebration of our rich heritage. Stay tuned for more updates as we progress with this historic initiative!
We look forward to your support and involvement as we celebrate 170 years of faith, service, and community in the Los Angeles area.
